By Charles Seife in Washington DC NASA’s assault on the Red Planet continues over the holiday season with two further missions. The Mars Climate Orbiter is already on its way, launched from Cape Canaveral on 11 December. It is due to be followed on 3 January by the Mars Lander. The Mars Climate Orbiter, which will monitor the weather on Mars, is expected to arrive in September 1999. Like the Mars Global Surveyor currently in orbit round the planet, it will use drag from Mars’s atmosphere to bring it into the proper orbit. The satellite carries two instruments, a radiometer and a camera, which will measure temperatures and take pictures of clouds. The Mars Lander will plunge through the thin Martian atmosphere, brake with thrusters and a parachute, and land near the south pole. It has a robotic arm that will scoop soil. By heating the samples and measuring gas that comes off, scientists will study volatile chemicals including water and carbon dioxide. While falling through the atmosphere,
